Kidz ‘n’ Cats dolls were launched in 2009 with a collection of seven dolls (six at first and a seventh at Christmas). Since then the collection has increased significantly to now include a total of 64 collection dolls plus two Wish Dolls and many ‘specials’, each with their own distinctive look. Many of the dolls resemble each other but with different hairstyles, hair colour, eye colours and individual outfits artist Sonja Hartmann has made them all look very different, and each with their own personality. In the early years most dolls came with their own cat, though not all. As for the cats, not all dolls have come with a cat although most have. In 2015 however cats will not come with the Kidz, they will be available for separate purchase. It may be a surprise to learn that all the dolls have been made from six original face moulds.
In fact, there has been a face mould Sonja uses much more than the others and in the 2013 collection 12 of the 18 dolls incredibly shared this mould, including the boy dolls and the Hispanic/Hawaiian doll Kiki. With this most favoured face mould the Kidz ‘n’ Cats dolls have won DOTY Awards in 2012 with Grace and Laura and Dolls Awards of Excellence in 2013 for Kiki and Carlotta. In 2015 we had the sixth face mould with the introduction of Jennet, Robert, Julika and Marina, which we refer to as the ‘Mischevious’ face. We also saw the addition of the Mini dolls to the Kidz ‘n’ Cats collection. Mini dolls are 21cm tall, have wigs, acrylic eyes, hand painted faces, are made of vinyl and five joints.
What we learned in 2016 was that the Mini dolls moulds had in fact been created for a South African brand called Fun In Faith. Fun In Faith wanted a doll like “Kiki” with brown skin tone for their Old Testament inspired doll line, suitable for followers of Christian and Jewish faiths (the books come in two versions). Not only did they want a tall doll like Kiki, they wanted smaller play dolls for the gift market to make their brand accessible in two price ranges. Sonja Hartmann’s dolls had the perfect look and the Fun In Faith doll line was born. We’re very proud to be the exclusive retailers in Europe of the Fun In Faith dolls.
In 2016 there has been no new face for Kidz ‘n’ Cats but another five dolls from existing face moulds: Selena, Niko, Alice, Lucia, Clarissa, plus another two Mini Dolls, Annie and Fredy.
The big change this year has been the acquisition of Heart & Soul the parent company of the Kidz ‘n’ Cats brand, by Hape International AG. Production hasn’t followed through smoothly and late in 2016 we still await many of the new dolls and clothes in the 2016 catalogue.
